I am going for a consultation next week about having some Laser treatment on my face to get rid of some brown spots (age spots). The treatment is done with an IPL laser and I have been asked if I am susceptible to sunlight. I have looked at the patient leaflet for the drugs I am taking and cannot find anything about the sunlight (at the back of my mind I seem to remember something about the sun). The drugs I am taking are MTX by injection 25mgs, Hydroxochloroquine 1 per day and I have just started on sulsalazane 1 per day increasing to 4 per day over the next 4 weeks. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had laser treatment and also if any of you are aware that we have to keep out of the sun with any of the drugs I have mentioned.

Kind Regards

Val

Hi Val,

Mtx makes us more sensitive to sunlight, I'm not sure about the other 2 drugs.
I wear a high factor suncream since I started on mtx, I find I burn much easier than I did before.

I have lots of age spots all over my body, and it was not until my husband was diagnosed with malignant melanoma 5 monts ago and I read the pamphlet the hospital gave him about skin cancer, that I realised, that all those unsightly spots were due to taking immune suppresant drugs over a long period (in my case 18 years).
I am taking 25 mg mtx and 4 weeks ago I started on Cimzia. Again reading the blurb it mentions age spots and the the slightly increased chance of getting skin cancer. It has made me rather worried, so I made my GP check my spots. As many of them are on my back and I can`t check, she told me to see her regularly.
My husband has not been so lucky. A malignant melanoma on his leg has been cut out involving plastic surgery, as the operation had to be very wide and deep. A biopsy has found that the cancer has spread to the lymphnodes in the groin, and he is now waiting for a further operation. We are of course very worried. Last week he had a CT scan, and are now waiting for the next step of his treatment.
Sorry I am not being very cheerful, that is why I have not been on the Forum for a long time. I have had a lot of stress for a whole year. Since I lost my brother last april, I have been struggling with my RA, having had a continuous flare. Now I am putting all my hope in Cimzia. Will it be the magic bullet? or am I going to be unwell, as long as I have all the worries of my husband`s health.
At least one good thing has happened in our family. Our youngest son`s wife had a baby the 28th february. They call him Alexander. The birth went well, he weighed 8 lb, and he has brought joy to us all.

Enough for now. Merete

Hello Val,

I have vitiligo (Michael Jackson's white patches skin problem) When they were trying to diagnose me in 2008 they
advised me that this is also an auto immune problem which is possibly linked to the RA.
I have to put a high factor sun cream as I would burn. I also have brown spots on my hands.

Merete sorry to hear about all your problems but congrats on your grand child. Post on a sep blog
and we will all be there to support you.

I take Methotrexate and it has made me very sensitive to the sun. I am currently sat by the french window and we actually have sun today but I am going to have to move as I can feel it burning my scalp. I also suffer from rosecea and have to wear a factor 50 face protector due to my increased sensitivity.
